Mark Cook, a well-known Black activist from Seattle, will be coming the Coming Society. Mark was a political prisoner in Washington state and while in prison, started the first Black Panther Party chapter in the local state penetentiary. Since his release, he has been active and vocal about prisoners rights and edits a prison newsletter called The Rock. When the California prison strike took place in 2012 against indefinite solitary confinement and torture in prisons, Mark and his friends were crucial in helping spread the word. Black folks in the US are disproportionately arrested and tried for minor crimes than white counterparts. While in prison, there is use of torture tactics such as solitary confinement. Prisoners have responded through hunger strikes and petitions to publicize their conditions. There is a lot of organizing that communities of color in the US are engaged in that are not discussed or understood by people in Asia. We hope Mark’s talks can start to share these experiences.
